Bridges of Vardar Project, Skopje-Bitola, Macedonia |
| August 2006 |
|
The Bridges of Vardar Project was an authentic historical and artistic journey, which brought together 50 young people from different parts of Europe. Young people from Croatia, Macedonia, Portugal and Sweden manifested their talents and cultures through a palette of artistic activities, giving their tribute to the European cultural heritage and traditions, presenting it to the local residents in Macedonia. The event had a big local impact, helped by the reports in the media, and the public character of the artistic manifestations, held both in Skopje and Bitola, featuring pompous parade through its streets and theatre performances followed by installations, art performances and musical concerts. |
The activities within the project, which were mainly conducted by the participants themselves, brought together people from different national groups working as one unique group alltogether at the end.
Through the universal language of art and culture, by preparing and presenting a common artistic performance, the young people involved in the “Bridges of Vardar” Project developed strong skills regarding the personal development, intercultural learning and expression and creativity.
The most productive activities were the “Learning from Each Other” workshops, based on the “Dynamic Learning Space” methodology. Some of the participants, who had special skills volunteered to present them to the other interested participants. On paper charts, there was a division with the workshops in different time intervals, so that each participant can take part in at least two of the workshops. The “Learning from Each Other” workshops featured playing guitar and singing, pantomime, Portuguese traditional games and street theatre (drama) acting. The interest in all the workshops was great, shared with an obvious enthusiasm among the participants.

Awareness for the diversity of personal identities of young people in Europe and all European Regions was raised during the project implementation. It was very important for the young people from EU Countries that they confronted with the different problems of the young people and societies in SEE. Especially because some of these young people are representing youth from peripheral areas, it was a wonderful opportunity for these young participants to grasp the wider European picture of integration of the marginalized youth in the societies. |
The activity “Creation process of a common performance for on stage presentation” brought the participants closer together, learning to work together and share their ideas and creativity, resulting in a common multi-art performance of 25 minutes approximate time. The performance combined different artistic skills and values, alluding to a bridge in its first part – messaging the initial idea of the project of bridging over the cultural gaps between people of different backgrounds. The second part of the common presentation illustrated a house, where, allegedly all the participants live and work. Its obvious metaphor was that we all live in the same house – Europe, and no matter how different we are and what we do, we need each other, so that the life in our house is complete. The composition of a multicultural event was a strong proof that different European cultures can peacefully coexist, and that even when they are being mixed they preserve their identities. |

During the non-formal time, out of the Project Programme, a Social committee was appointed, consisted of eight volunteers (two participants from each country). The Social committee organized various activities within the hotel and in the city and during that time, most of the friendships on a personal base were developed.
The free time fulfillment was consisted of night walks in the City, making theme parties in the hotel and organized hanging out in local cafes. |
