Macedonian Youth Parliament

February 2006, Bitola, Macedonia

YMCA Macedonia with Hans Saidel Shtiftung and Youth Parliament Croatia organized the first Youth Parliament of Macedonia. The initiative united more than 100 young Macedonians from youth NGOs, student unions and unorganized youth, as well as guests from Germany, Croatia, Bulgaria and Albania.

The aim of the Macedonian Youth Parliament is to enable efficient active participation of the young people within the decision-making processes at the local and regional level and to secure a forum for a dialogue between the young people from different social, ethnic and religious backgrounds and the local authorities.

The Constitutional Assembly of the Macedonian Youth Parliament took place in Bitola, February 6. One hundred young people from various parts of the country, representing different youth NGOs and clubs, as well as students and young people not belonging to a particular organization gathered together, effectively discussing different problems from their neighborhoods. Representatives of the local authorities in the country also attended the event and were involved in the discussions with the young people. At the event, the guests from the Croatian Youth Parliament exposed their experience through workshops and presentations. It was concluded that in the future the Youth Parliament will work as an umbrella organization for the youth, giving support to the youth initiatives and projects and helping to get funding for them. This project was realized by financial support from the European Union, within the frameworks of the regional CARDS programme for Democratic Stabilization.
